Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom is a puzzle game released in 1990 on several Japanese home computers, including the Sharp X1, MSX, and PC-88. In the context of a country with many incidents, the game describes the journey to save Princess Tomato of Cucumber. Many years ago, the Kingdom of Salad was a peaceful land. But then one day, the desire for power led Minister Pumpkin to betray King Broccoli. He kidnapped Princess Tomato and took her to his own castle in the deserted mountains of Zucchini. At the same time, he sent his underlings as his evil Farmies to terrorize the Kingdom of Salad. Not long after that, the king died because he could not recover after the loss of his beautiful daughter. As the greatest knight in the kingdom, Cucumber set out to find a way to save this nation and rescue the princess. At the same time, the king promised to yield the throne and marry the princess to him if Cucumber could save the beautiful Tomato from the cruel Pumpkin’s clutches. The game ends when Cucumber defeats the evil Prime Minister Pumpkin and brings the princess back.
The game has a total of 14 basic commands to choose from including MOVE, TALK, CHECK, LOOK, FIGHT, HIT, USE, GIVE, BUY, ITEM, PRAISE, DUMP, and PERCY. Every action you perform in the game is controlled by these commands. The puzzles in the game are also very intuitive. There are many levels in the game. At the end of each level, Percy will add some items in your inventory. These items can be useful at the next level – the special level is Sgt. When Pepper is interrogating you and Percy. Sergeant Pepper can shoot you or send you to jail. If he throws you in jail, you will have to find a way out of there. Once locked inside, a water system will open, you must find a way to unlock the door before you drown. However, the time for you to find a way out is quite a lot, you can calmly think before deciding to take action.
The game also has the function to save the latest game. You can save the game at any time quickly and simply. In each save, the system will ask you to set a password for that save. You can set arbitrary passwords but try to remember them so you cannot play the next time you play. There is nothing worse than having to start the game because you forgot your password.
