PoPoLoCrois is an isometric retro-style role-playing game with cel shading. This PSP version of the game is the first installment in the series to be made available anywhere other than Japan. It is a reimagining of the first two PoPoLoCrois games for the PlayStation, merged into a single experience and improved in various ways. You take on the role of Prince Pinon, a ten-year-old boy tasked with finding a method to rescue his sleeping beauty mother and the entire realm from the clutches of Ancient Evil.
While you are playing, you can form a party with several unique characters, each with a distinct personality and approach to fighting. When you disable the game’s auto-combat setting, fights occur randomly and take on a more turn-based, semi-strategic nature. You won’t be taken to a new screen when you engage in combat; instead, the background will shift to form a diagonal grid, where you will move and engage in combat with the foe. There are various possible strategies in these battles, ranging from special skills to tag-team assaults. An action gauge that gradually fills up determines what actions can be taken. You can save the game manually or let it do it automatically.
