Downstream serves as the inspiration for the visual style of the racing video game Light Trax. The player navigates a beam of light on a semi-three-dimensional plane, which can be thought of as a two-dimensional plane that periodically tilts upward. The player competes with other light rays as they navigate a circuit. The beam’s speed can be increased by pulling up alongside other beams or collecting power-ups.
The campaign is a grand prix game in which the player competes against other light beams on several tracks. If the player is successful, they can unlock higher difficulty settings. In the “Freeway” game mode, the player’s shaft moves in a never-ending circuit while attempting to reach the maximum possible speed within the allotted time. This time restriction can be increased by passing rays of different colors.
