It should be noted that Worms: Open Warfare is not a continuation of the Worms series but rather a new installment developed especially for the mobile gaming platforms of today. The game reverts to the traditional 2D gameplay and smaller weapon set of the earlier Worms games rather than continuing with the 3D approach used in Worms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem; instead of continuing with the 3D style, the game returns to its roots.
In a manner analogous to that of artillery games, each player controls a squad of worms tasked with engaging in combat against other players’ forces amongst a destructible landscape and armed with an assortment of bizarre weapons. The player can play against computer teams in single-player mode, where they can compete in custom matches or set challenges for themselves, or they can play against other human players in either the hot-swap mode or the multiplayer mode. The PSP version has wifi Ad-Hoc capabilities, while the DS version supports single-cartridge multiplayer.
