This game is a direct continuation of the Patapon series. The tiny eyeball warriors have resumed their search for “IT” at Earthend and have returned. The player once again assumes the position of “The Mighty One” or “Mighty Patapon” to guide the party through their various trials by beating the sacred Pata, Pon, Chaka, and Don drums in time with the beat of the game’s background music (BGM). The Patapons will act in various other orders when different combinations are used.
The actual gameplay consists of a series of stages that may be accessible from Patapolis. Most of these levels are playable more than once but become increasingly challenging each time.
The Patapons now have the assistance of the Hero Patapon, which can be any sort of Patapon that is currently unlocked in the game. The Hero Patapon can be of any use to the Patapons. The Hero shares the same statistics as the other Patapons, but his qualities might change based on the type of mask he is sporting at any given time. Additionally, depending on the kind of Patapon he is set to, he possesses various unique powers.
In addition to the minigames and other aspects that were carried over from the first game, there is also an evolution tree. This tree allows each Patapon to change his appearance as he levels up, acquires new abilities, and uses traits.
Through the Patagate Shrine, several players can now work together to take down Giant Bosses and demolish enemy fortresses, each employing their unique and personalized Hero Patapon to do so. When this is done, the Hero is rewarded with riches such as new masks to wear, Komupons (NPCs that play the role of Hero Patapons), various resources, and equipment.
Patapon 2 was first made available in North America only as a digital download from the Playstation Store, as it was not distributed with a UMD disc at its initial release.
