Following the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Naked Snake withdraws from the United States and establishes himself in Colombia. He creates Militaires Sans Frontières (Soldiers Without Borders), a private military organization that aids developing countries. The story of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will explain the circumstances that led to Militaires Sans Frontières becoming Outer Heaven in later games and seeing him eventually accept his place as Big Boss. Snake is still grappling with guilt after the murder of someone close to him.
Snake meets Ramón Gálvez, a peace instructor, and his student, Paz Ortega, one day—the two hope to enlist the assistance of Médecins Sans Frontières in assisting Costa Rica. Recently, an unknown armed force with high-tech weapons has been causing havoc throughout the country. Because Costa Rica’s constitution prohibits the establishment of a military army, there is little anyone can do about it. Snake initially declined to assist, fearing it would increase tensions in Latin America, which many believe is crucial to retaining power in the East and West. Snake accepts after Gálvez presents him with a tape recorder that mistakenly recorded a discussion between two ladies, claiming that one of the voices on the tape belongs to The Boss herself. Snake then embarks on a trip to not only restore peace to Costa Rica but also to restore peace to himself.
Peace Walker occurs between the events of Snake Eater and the first Metal Gear game. The analog stick controls snake, and the remaining buttons alter based on the sort of button configuration you select: shooter, action, or hunter. The gameplay is similar to that seen in the Metal Gear series, with stealth-based mobility. That doesn’t mean you must always be stealthy; if you wish, you may just let go and blast your foes with anything from an M16A1 to a Stun Rod. Cutscenes are presented in a beautiful comic book format reminiscent of Portable Ops, with some being interactive.
Near the beginning of the game, you will be granted a central mother base to employ for various purposes. You may save your game, develop weapons, and go on quests from here. At the Mission Selector screen, you can replay earlier missions to improve your score and even participate in bonus missions that aren’t necessary for the main story. Cutscenes that you have seen throughout the primary campaign can be seen again. Developing and upgrading weaponry is accomplished by spending GMP, which you earn by completing tasks. You can organize your MSF crew into different squads based on their strengths and capabilities at Mother Base. Putting the appropriate individuals in the proper places will increase the chances of developing new items and weaponry.
The game’s multiplayer is confined to ad-hoc mode and co-op. All story missions can be played with up to two players, while the other co-op missions can be played with up to four people. The snake can travel to an island where you and your pals may hunt against creatures from Capcom’s Monster Hunter series after completing certain quests and achieving specific prerequisites.
