Captain Skyhawk is a shooting game developed by Rare and released by Milton Bradley Company for Nintendo in 1994. You will play the role of a young soldier to fight against the invasion of aliens. They have built four bases on land and sea to invade Earth. These bases are designed to drain the Earth’s energy and send it to their space battleship. If this battleship has enough energy, it will destroy the Earth with a powerful beam of energy. During the course of the game, scientists are working on secretly creating a powerful neutron weapon. In some missions, players will have to protect these scientists. In some cases, aliens will arrest one of the scientists. After that, you will have to break into their base to rescue the scientist.
The game is quite similar to the classic Zaxxon of Sega with isometric graphics and controls. You will have to fly a plane codenamed F-14VTS to destroy alien vehicles. However, you must avoid the terrain raised during the flight if you do not want to lose your life. You will also lose your life by being hit by enemy attacks or touching them.
Captain Skyhawk consists of 9 main missions. The first seven missions, you will have to destroy 3 of the alien fortress. While the 8th and 9th missions you only need to destroy 2 fortresses. Each level has many different routes. At some flight paths, you can ignore enemies to get to the next level.
Players can shoot one of four types of weapons: Cannon, missile interceptor Phoenix Air, Maverick missiles and Hawk bombs. Cannon Cannon is a weapon you can shoot unlimitedly, the remaining weapons will have a certain usage limit. If you want to increase the use time of these weapons, you can pick up items that fall from an enemy. In addition, you can also buy these items from the store in the middle of the level. When killing an enemy, you will get a certain score. You will reach the highest score when destroying the enemy aircraft. Use these scores to buy necessary items. The limited weapons will help you kill enemies faster and complete the task more easily. After destroying 4 bases that aliens have built, you will confront the enemy’s battleship. This battleship cannot be destroyed by conventional weapons. You need to use neutron weapons that scientists have created to destroy this battleship.
