La-Mulana is a remake of the 2005 film of the same name. It is an explorable platformer / metroidvania, or as the designers define it, an “Archaeological Ruin Exploration Action Game” with demanding platforming action and riddles. The original game’s massive environment was recreated from the ground up, with various changes made to the gameplay and presentation:* The game now looks like 32-bit 2D games from the PlayStation and Sega Saturn eras.
- The soundtrack was modified to match the new presentation, using different instruments.
- Many puzzles were changed to make them more accessible, and some were removed entirely while the overall difficulty of the gameplay was enhanced.
- Many locations have been changed, and new rooms, opponents, and items have been added.
- Many of the early sub-bosses and all of the Guardian bosses were significantly altered (both in terms of appearance and behavior patterns);
- All references to old MSX games were erased from the in-game software system);
- Many control difficulties and minor gameplay components were fixed in response to player input.
This remake was first made available through Nintendo’s WiiWare service. Due to file-size restrictions, it did not include the optional material – Hell Temple region and Time Attack mode – which were later offered in Japan as a separate download. This content is included in the base game of the later PC port. The PS Vita version, dubbed La-Mulana EX, has additional gameplay improvements, a new bestiary, and rearranged item placements.
